DEVENS, MA – September 24, 2015 – Heroes Remembered: A Ceremony Honoring World War II Veterans, will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015, at 1:00pm, in the Hall of Flags, located at One Quebec Street at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. The event, co-hosted by State Representative Jennifer Benson (D-Lunenburg) and State Representative Sheila Harrington (R-Groton), will feature a traditional military program, and special guest Governor Charlie Baker as the keynote speaker.
“We’re doing this event because we believe we have an obligation to honor these veterans before it’s too late,” said Rep. Harrington. “We just commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and most of the surviving veterans are in their 90s.”
According to data provided by the Veterans Administration, there are less than 25,000 living World War II veterans in Massachusetts. By 2020, it is estimated there will be less than 5,000.
“I’m very much looking forward to this event,” said Rep. Benson. “It’s being held at the historic Hall of Flags building in Fort Devens, and I think it will be a very moving, solemn ceremony honoring the veterans of the Greatest Generation.”
The traditional 90-minute program will include a presentation of the American flag, a performance of the National Anthem and other patriotic music selections, and the reading of a special Proclamation by Governor Baker honoring Massachusetts’s World War II veterans.
World War II Veterans and their families from across the Commonwealth are invited to attend. Ample parking is available, and the Hall of Flags is handicap accessible. It is requested that veterans and their guests be seated by 1:00pm to ensure a prompt start to the ceremony.
